Facts about Brunei Darussalam

Officially Brunei Darussalam, the country is a small country located on the Island of Borneo in Southeast Asia. The literal translation of Brunei Darusalam is, "The Abode of Peace".

It operates a socialist system that is arguably the closest any nation has come to a welfare state with the government providing free education, medical services, and other such necessaries. The Capital city of Brunei is Bandar Seri Begawan.

Brunei only has one season, Summer. At anytime of the year, Brunei can be relied upon to be generally warm with occasional rain. It is therefore best to wear lightweight fabrics in Brunei. One should also take along some rainy day gear such as jackets. However, visitors should dress conservatively in Brunei bearing in mind that it is an Islamic country. Female visitors do not have to wear hijabs but must wear clothing that cover as much skin as possible.

Bruneian culture is predominantly Malay with heavy Islamic influences. Malays make up 65.7%, Chinese folk are about 10.3% and about 24% of Brunei is made up of other ethnicities. It is a Sharia country. Its cuisine is largely influenced by neighboring Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia. It also features a lot of Chinese and Indian food. Rice and fish are staple foods with meat such as pork avoided since it is an Islamic nation. The national food of Brunei is Ambuyat.

Alcohol sale and public consumption is banned in Brunei. Visitors are allowed to bring a limited amount of alcohol (to be consumed privately) into the country.

Some interesting tourist locations in Brunei are:
  • Ulu Temburong National Park: The national park is known as "The Green Jewel of Brunei". It features canopy walks offering views of the vast forest, hidden waterfalls, and natural pools.
