Facts about Malawi


The Republic of Malawi as it is officially known covers an area of over 118,000 sq. km. Its capital city Lilongwe, is the largest city in the country. 

About 85% of the country’s population live in the rural areas. Malawi is one of the world’s least developed countries. The economy of the country is partly dependent on agriculture even though about 80% of the population engage in farming activities.
 
Tobacco, sugarcane, cotton, tea, sorghum etc. are examples of agricultural products gotten in the country. Tea and fish are the most popular dishes in the country. Nsima is a common dish in the country and it made of ground corn.
 
The major religion in Malawi is Christianity. There is also a significant practice of Islamic religion. English is the official language of the country. Chewa and Arabic languages are also spoken by about 60% and 30% of the population respectively.
 
There are ships, boats, cars, buses, and airplanes in the country and these are the means of transportation in and out of the country although, the transportation system in the country is poorly developed.
 
During rainy seasons which is from November to April, the weather is usually hot while during dry seasons which is from May till mid-November, there is always a cool weather. The best time to visit the country is from May to October. There are some tourist attractions like;
  • Lake Malawi: It is a beautiful sight to behold. A home to Cichlid fish and many species of aquatic birds. This lake is for lovers of nature.
  • Chinteche: This beach has fine white sands and is a beautiful place to spend the weekend. It has comfortable accommodations and there are also lots of fun activities to engage in.
  • Kande Horse Stables: This is a place to enjoy horse riding. These horses can take you into the lake whilst still on their backs. It is also a place to enjoy your weekend.                                                                                                                                                                               There were about 850,000 visitors in 2017. When in Malawi, there are a variety of hotels to stay in especially in the capital city Lilongwe.
