Basic Travel Requirements for Nigerians visiting Sudan

Travelers are required to fulfill the following requirements in order to apply for a Sudanese Visa.


  • Passport with a validity of more than 6 months from the intended period of exiting the country. The passport should have at least two blank pages for the necessary stamp.
  • Duly completed visa application form signed by the applicant.
  • Two recent passport-sized photographs with a white background. The photo should follow the specification for a visa application.
  • Original copy of bank statement from the past three months prior to the period of visa application. This is proof of a steady and continuous flow of funds.
  • Travel insurance which has sufficient medical coverage. The insurance should be valid for the duration of your stay in the country.
  • Proof of accommodation for the period you will be staying in the country.

The city of Khartoum is the largest and capital city of Sudan. The climate in Sudan is mainly tropical and which is spilt into the spring, fall, spring and winter. The winter months are considered the ideal time to visit the country, when the warm weather is pleasant and enjoyable for travelers. Sudan is home to over 500 different tribes, a rich culture, many traditions and an excellent cuisine. Its popular foods are beef stews, mashed beans, flat bread and thick millet/corn porridges. The majority of the Sudanese people are Muslims and many indigenous tribes practice animism. Over 100 indigenous languages are spoken in Sudan, with Arabic and English as its official languages.

The largest airport and main carrier for air travel in Sudan is located in its capital city of Khartoum. There are also inland airlines available for travel within the country, however, the railway network is slow and not a very convenient means of getting around. For intra city travel, there are buses, taxis, minibuses and car rentals. Sudan is one of the safest places to visit in Africa and the crime rate is at a low. The Nuba Mountains, Darfur and the borderlands with South Sudan are out of bounds to travelers and considered the less safe locations to see. Keep in mind also that scorpions are common in the desert.

  • The Pyramids of Meroe: this is the most iconic tourist site in Sudan. You can go see the brick-built and steep-sided pyramids which sprout in groups of dozen at a time. You will also find tourist touts offering souvenirs or camel rides.


  • Dinder National Park: one of the largest park in Africa and home to 27 species of large mammal including big cats and giraffe. It is also habitats for a large specie of birds, like the kingfisher, pelican and the beautiful crown crane. It is perfect for adventure activities too like hiking and wildlife safaris, it's a nature lover’s heaven.


  • National Museum, Khartoum: The museum is home to several informative exhibits chronicling the country’s journey from its beginning during the Pharaonic era to modern day Sudan. Travelers can take in many ancient artifacts, including original stone carvings and numerous Christian frescoes. The gardens in which the museum is located boast several temples which are also worth a visit.


  • Jebel Marra: the highest peak in southwestern Darfur, Jebel Marra stands at a whopping 10,000 feet. Not only is the mountain great for such activities as hiking and mountain climbing, but the area is stunning as well, boasting of natural formations as waterfalls and volcanic lakes.


There are over 10,000 hotels and apartments to stay in Sudan, so you will be spoiled for choice especially when in Khartoum.


It is against the law for people of the opposite sex to share the same hotel room if you are not married or closely related. Before you can take a picture in the country, you need a permit from the External Information Centre in Khartoum.
