The Republic of Croatia is located in Central and Southeast Europe on the coast of the Adriatic Sea. Herzegovina, Bosnia, and Montenegro are to southeast of Croatia, Serbia is to the east, Hungary is to the northeast, and Slovenia is to the northwest. Croatia has its capital in Zagreb. However, it is best to visit Croatia during the shoulder months (May and September) as the climate is pleasant, the skies are sunny, and the crowds are fewer in these months.

Every region of Croatia has its own distinct culinary traditional. For instance, in the mainland, cuisine is more influenced by the earlier Slavic culinary practices and the more recent practices of neighboring countries such as Hungary and Turkey. Therefore, cuisine here features spices such as black pepper, paprika, and garlic. In the coastal region on the other hand, culinary tradition is influenced by Greek, Roman, and Italian cuisine and features spices and herbs like olive oil, rosemary, sage, bay leaf, oregano, marjoram, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, and lemon.

  • Dubrovnik: Dubrovnik is an old, magical town situated within sturdy, medieval defense walls. Merely walking the walls in the city is a tourist experience in itself. Dubrovnik is also the setting of King's Landing in HBO's Game of Thrones.
  • Hvar Town: Hvar is the most fashionable of the world popular Dalmatian Islands of Croatia, a tourist hub. It's car-free old town is home to some of the country's best hotels and seafood restaurants. It also features a 16th Century Cathedral, a hilltop fortress, and a pretty fishing harbor. 
  • Zadar's Romanesque Churches: A most important historic site, Zadar is quite popular for its beautiful Romanesque Churches built between the 9th and 13th Centuries. The churches are filled with beautiful, ancient religious paintings and ornate golden treasures.
  • Plitvice National Park: This National Park is Croatia's most visited inland attraction. It features forested hillsides surrounding a whooping 16 emerald-blue lakes connected by spectacular waterfalls. The park is home to several wild animals such as wolves, bears, owls, eagles, and falcons. There are several hotels at the park if one chooses spend the night.
